RP 1

Theatre-temples: regional studies in Sicily-southern Italy

The project will explore the development of the theatre-temple nexus throughout the Graeco-Roman period in two specific regions, Sicily and Southern Italy. It aims to highlight shared features, if any, between relevant architectural ensembles, and to deepen specificities related to different contexts. The main objective is to understand the interaction between theatrical architectures and sacred areas, and the interplay between physical setting and religious practice/performance.

To this end, a robust documentary basis will be required and, where necessary, it will be produced and processed, in order to fulfil the gaps in our knowledge, and to allow a comprehensive reading of the overall archaeological and cultural context.
