Theatres and sanctuaries in the south-western provinces of the Roman empire: re-shaping Hellenistic and Roman models

This project will explore the architectural design of theatre resp. theatre-sanctuary complexes in the western part of the Roman Empire, through a comparative approach reconstructing a thematic map of this type of architectural and ritual complexes in the south-western provinces, with a special focus on Hispania.

Through a multidisciplinary approach (enquires based on material, archaeological, architectural, literary, epigraphic and historical sources, bibliography) the research will analyse the usage of traditional concepts and elements known from the Greek world (e.g., via the former western-Greek colonies) and those known from the Italic heartland of the Roman Empire.

The aim is to clarify the spreading of this peculiar architectural model through the Mediterranean areas, and to understand similarities and differences with the models from which the theatre-sanctuary complexes in Hispania originated.
