Asking the god, performing for the god: manteia and theatrical performances in the sanctuary of Zeus at Dodona (Epirus)

The project addresses the architectural setting of the oracular sanctuary at Dodona (Epirus, Greece) and the theatrical structure within it, as well as the rituals and performances held in the sacred area. It aims to reconstruct the involvement of the ancient pilgrims in the rituals at the sanctuary of Dodona as a holistic experience, which included the consultation of the oracle and the attendance of performances. It also aims to investigate to which extent the rituals related to the cult of Zeus were connected to and mirrored in the performances held in the theatre of Dodona. Thus, it examines the interplay between theatrical and sacred architecture, religious experience, and performance.

The project will examine the rituals in the sanctuary as they are reflected in the oracular tablets, the accounts from the literary sources, and the epigraphic record. It will combine such data with those available from archaeological excavations and the extant remains in the area. Overall, it will highlight the interplay between architectural setting (sanctuary and theatre) and religious experience, including both oracular rituals and theatrical performances, without neglecting athletic contests. As a result, the project will achieve a fuller understanding of the interconnection between cult, theatre, and performance.
